Sonnet From The Maltese

Influenced by the past’s great poets, each of these forty sonnets attempts
to explore the complexities of human love and spirituality, as is typical of
the Victorian Sonnet tradition. These poems, seeking to weave together
ideas of eschatology, Christology, nudism, and bisexuality, aim to show
that physical beauty is connected with divine love and that they lead to
the ultimate destiny of the soul. They are accompanied by poetic
inquiries during an era characterised by its adherence to morality and
concern for sublime experiences. The emotional intensity and aesthetic
appeal often found in Victorian poetry are symbolised by the use of
words borrowed from the era as well as the stylistic approaches found in
this collection of sonnets. Essentially, these sonnets honour mankind’s
body. To fuse sensuality with spirituality and earthliness with divinity so
as to celebrate life’s richness has been what I set out to achieve when
writing these sonnets.
